After Endodontic Treatment

printer Print Page

Immediately after endodontic treatment the duration of local anesthetic used will vary from patient to patient. Please avoid chewing during this period. Afterwards, your tooth and surrounding gum tissue may be slightly tender for 3-5 days as a result of manipulation during treatment and the previous condition of your tooth. This tenderness is normal and is no cause for alarm. Do not chew food on the affected side until your endodontic therapy is completed and your tooth is covered with a protective restoration provided by your dentist. You may continue your regular dental hygiene regimen. If you have been given any prescription medication such as antibiotics or pain medications, please take the medication as per instruction. If you have been prescribed an antibiotic regimen or any other prescribed drugs and you develop an itch or rash anywhere on your body please STOP taking the medication, call our office or your medical doctor immediately as this can be a sign of allergic reaction. If you have not been prescribed any medication, discomfort may be alleviated by taking ibuprofen (Advil), aspirin, or acetaminophen (Tylenol) as directed. Your soreness and discomfort may last up to 48 hours. Should you experience discomfort that cannot be controlled with the above listed medications, or should swelling develop, please contact this office immediately. If you need to call after hours, please have your pharmacy number available.

After root canal treatment has been completed on your tooth, an appointment MUST be made with your dentist to have the tooth permanently restored as soon as possible.
